What types of tariffs are there? ⚡💡
Within the UK there are four major types of tariffs available to customers. These are:
Fixed 🔒
- The price per kWh stays the same throughout the day (though it can change over time).
- Standard variable tariffs fall into this category.
- This is the most common tariff for home energy users, but not ideal for EV charging because you can’t optimize for cheaper times.
Time of use ⏰
- Prices vary depending on the time of the day.
- This tariff is very popular with EV users because they offer cheap overnight windows for charging.
- Most have 2 rates per day, but some have 3 or 4.
- Great for scheduling EV charging when energy is cheaper and greener.
Examples of Time of Use Tariffs include Octopus Go, EDF GoElectric and OVO Economy 7
Agile 🔄
- Prices change every 30 minutes, linked to wholesale energy costs.
- Highly dynamic and influenced by weather conditions.
- Prices are published the evening before, so only certain smart chargers can optimize for this tariff.
Examples of Agile tariffs include Octopus Agile
Smart EV tariffs 🔌
- The price depends on how you use the energy, not just when.
- The tariff requires platform integration between your EV or EV Charger and the energy company.
- The energy company controls when your car charges in exchange for very low rates.
Examples of Smart EV tariffs include Intelligent Octopus Go, OVO Charge Anytime, EDF Smart Charging Bolt On, EON Next Drive Smart & Scottish Power EV Optimise.
Indra chargers are compatible with the below Smart Tariffs - click on the links to read more about our integration for each one.
